The point of video poker is to obtain any of the winning poker hand combinations. The winning arrangements and the payoff schedule will be posted on the video poker machine.

Playing The Game

  • Put coins in the machine and make a bet, which has to be placed before you draw your cards, and can't be altered once play starts.
  • Then, push the "Draw/Deal" button to see your first hand of five cards.
  • Decide if you would like to keep any of the cards in your hand and press the "Hold/Cancel" button under the one(s) you want to hold onto. If you change your decision and don't want to keep a previously held card push the "Hold/Cancel" button again.
  • Double check that there is conformation that you have held the cards you want. The word "hold" should flash under the cards you chose to hold.
  • Press Draw/Deal again to obtain new cards for those not held.
  • If you win, the machine pays off and is then ready for the next round.
The following list of hands win, ordered top to bottom from the worst hands to the best:

One Pair (Jacks or better)
In video poker only pairs of jacks, queens, and kings or aces pay off. A pair is always two cards of the same value or rank

Two Pair
You have two pair if the hand has two pair plus an odd card, such as 6, 6, 7, 7, 2.

Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same value along with two odd cards (such as 7, 7, 7, A and 2) is considered three of a kind.

Straight
A straight is five cards in order, but not of the same suit. Ace of Diamonds, 2 of Clubs, 3 of Hearts, 4 of Clubs and 5 of Spades are an example of a straight.

Flush
If you have five cards of the same suit in your hand, you have a flush, such as 4 of Clubs, 5 of Clubs, 7 of Clubs, Queen of Clubs and Ace of Clubs.

Full House
Three cards of one rank plus two cards of another rank make up a full house (for example J, J, J, 4, 4 or 6, 6, 6, 8, 8).

Four of a Kind
This hand is made up of four cards of the same value plus one other odd card. For example Q, Q, Q, Q, 3.

Straight Flush
A Straight Flush consists of five cards of the same suit and in order. Take note that an ace can normally be counted as the lowest card in the order. For example A, 2, 3, 4, 5 is a group of five ordered cards. A straight flush is the second highest hand possible in video poker.

Royal Flush
A Royal Flush consists of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 of the same suit.

Don't forget the cards will not usually be in order on the screen, so be mindful when looking at your hand! Most video poker games do not let you know about a hand/potential hand until after the game has been played.
